HELP!!! How do I use the smash ball?

So I'm sorta confused on how to use the smash ball once you've obtained it. Can anyone tell me what buttons I'm supposed to press?

    Just hit the B button, or whatever button you have assigned to specials. Some Final Smashes require you to be close to the opponent, so be mindful =)

    So I'm Kirby, pressing the B button a toooooon of times while my oponent is attacking me. Nothing happens! I was so focused on performing a smash attack that I was thrown off the screen and killed!

    on some people you need to be close to an opponent and standing still. If your moving you'll do a special.
