I think I figured out the reason why I'm so bad at building teams for competitive Pokémon battling: With nearly all of my teams I'm insistent on playing a balanced playstyle, whereas balance is the hardest style to both build for and play and it would be a better approach to use a more specialized style until I'm better at teambuilding overall.
