    As StormFlash mentioned, there is a way around this. If you place a sticky piston with the sticky end facing the diamond ore with a gap of 1 block between the two, and then power the sticky piston, (with lever, button, redstone block, etc.) it will extend forward, and when you deactivate it, it will pull the diamond ore blocks out of the wall!
