1st time Smash Player

So in honor of Bayonetta this week I've bought my 1st Smash Bros game. Customizing controls to work the way the Bayo games do. First thoughts. I stink! Time to practice...a lot! Tips by the way, totally welcomed!

  • Bayonetta games is a combo button pressing game though. Smash is not. Anyways, have fun playing Smash. :)

  • It has combos in it. I did some research prior to pulling the trigger. Definitely not the same but it rewards a good combo. And Bayonetta has carried a lot of her functionality over. Most importantly the ability to extend attack combos by holding down a second longer between buttons. I'll know more Wednesday but so far it seems fun.

  • Best advice I can give you is this: When you are consistently losing against the one character or strategy, instead of deciding you hate that character because they're ‘cheap’ or ‘OP’, actively seek out a way to counter what it is they're doing. Nothing in this game can't be dealt with. Also, an arguably more critical point is making sure you remember to have fun!

  • Thanks Orianna! Sound advice. It got way more fun when I changed the buttons around to match what I'm used to. Jumping was just driving me nuts wo having a thumb option.

  • Yes it has combos, but its not the same as PKP PPKK PPPKK PPKKP etc Smash doesn't have that feel like the Bayo games does is my point. (although Smash as a series existed in 1999)

  • It's not a good idea you know... I mean, Bayonetta games are nothing like Smash, not even Ryu is like his Street Fighter self. You have Standard attacks, Tilt attacks, Air attacks, Special attacks and finally the Smash attacks. If you try to customize the controls it's fine but I personally don't recommend it, even if it was in a Wii U Pro Controller.

  • Ryu for example (again) has his SF2 combos, you know LK LK LK Hadoken(?) would be one of them but Bayonetta looks... different. She is not from a fighting game, she doesn't have special attacks, she has Punch, Kick, Witch Time or counter(?) and Jump in the original games. In Smash you only have FIVE useful buttons that are B (Specials) A (Normal attacks) X or Y (Jump) L or R (Shield) and Z (Grabs)

  • Oh I do know that the combos will significantly be less. I did A LOT of research as I was on the fence for quite some time. As for changing the controls it was for my comfort as I like attack buttons located as they were in Bayo as well as the jump button. It's intuitive to me at this point. So rather then learn all new strategies plus controls I went with customizing the controls to my...

  • ...liking, and the results were immediate. I'd already watched a few basic videos on game mechanics and once I made the switch I started winning fights offline. Which is where I'll be for some time as I get a feel now for the rhythm of things.

  • Breaking myself of dodge offset will definitely take work!

  • Awesome! Smash for WiiU was my first Smash. I asked for it for Christmas when it was released because I just wanted a WiiU game. It has turned out to be one of my favorites and I honestly still stink at it! I enjoy it for the characters, craziness, and the AMAZING soundtrack. Seriously, the soundtrack is absolutely incredible.
