Amiibo not working?

Okay, so I just bought a Shulk Amiibo, opened up opened smash went to games and more and pressed amiibo, and put it on my new 3ds. It didnt scan, ive tried several times, am i doing something wromg??

    Do other amiibos work fine? That'll tell you whether the problem is with the amiibo itself or not. If the amiibo is defective, I'm sure you could return it.
