BE HONEST WITH ME: Why do we all hate top tiers so much?

It can't just be because we want to win or we're sore losers. I mean, we have many characters for different reasons. Use them to exploit the foe's weaknesses. You must be asking, "RCW, I see top tiers so much and I hate it!" If you fight one of those repeatedly, you WILL learn their weaknesses. It needs time. (More in next comment.)

  • I really don't want to sound like a bully, but I think this new generation of gamers is so unbearably impatient. If they want to go to a tournament, they must deal with it. Also, this hatred can also be deadly to friendships. I kinda felt bad for ZeRo and other pro players when they have to listen to the negativity of the crowd. I got negative feedback playing Fox in Melee. It's sad. (More soon)

  • If anything, using a top tier means you're very well geared for success. Pracitce them, and you could win a number of times. I know that's what you want, guys! I also wanna mention somebody, but I fear that might be advertising. So, please answer: Am I right on this? Are there any other reasons for this hatred?

  • That's the whole problem with the Smash competitive scene. Too many abrasive people. There are some good people out there, don't get me wrong.. But the SSB community can indeed be unbearable at times. Plus, Sm4sh is no Melee. In that, I mean the roster is MUCH more balanced. So it's like ya said. You just have to find the weakness. Tier lists are a reference point, nothing more

  • I don't actually hate top tiers. There always a select few characters that are the best, you can't get around that. With that said, I recognize balance issues, like with Sheik's Needle Storm or ZSS's ladder KO's. I don't think that's good design from a balance point of view. Though I don't mind players playing top tiers. Yeah it's a bit tiresome as player and spectator, but I can't blame them.

  • I think they're just jealous that their character can't beat a top tier character. Every character can do well, but the ones with the best matchups can always go farther.

  • @Al-X: Indeed. Tiers are reference, and we all should keep in mind that skill is the bigger thing for the player to succeed. @Jasper: When you said ZSS's ladder KOs, that triggered something in my mind. Some players might hate certain characters due to unexpectedness. But this goes for EVERY character. (i.e. Charizard hits Ness out of PK Thunder 2 with Fly.)

  • I feel like the problem is a lot of people don't know how to get around high level combos and techniques so they just blame it on the tier list. Yeah some characters are better than others but good fundamentals, DI and reads can take any player a long way

  • I don't hate people using top tier characters. If you want to use them back to back, go nuts! But from a spectator's point of view, it can be boring to see everyone just only using top tier characters only. And I don't blame them for thinking that because I too would like to see people mix it up once in the while. That also makes a match (Both Tourney-wise, offline and online) more interesting...

  • ...and exciting. Who want to see a top tier character like Shiek gets owned by a low tier character? :) That's how I felt and that's the problem with Melee. People run too much to the top tier characters and don't use low tier ones. Despite Brawl is slow, they kinda remedied the problem and really remedied the "top tier characters only" problem in Smash Wii U and 3DS. But I do see a change a...

  • ...little bit in Melee though. Top players start using and winning with low tier characters. That's somewhat a good thing. But I'm straying too far away from the subject. Again, not miffed at people that using only top tier characters. But please from time to time use some low tier characters. You can improve your existing skill set that you have.

  • Thanks for the replies, guys. In case anyone's wondering, I don't usually use top-tier characters. In fact, back when I was a little troublemaker (too harsh?), I used low-tier characters because they're low-tier. I still use Charizard in this game, and it's my main. I still use not because of the aforementioned statement, but because, well, I just really like it. (Gah, more soon.)

  • I also do play my fair share of top tiers in the series, too. I sometimes play Kirby in 64, Fox in Melee, and ZSS (just getting into) in Smash 4. Not necessarily to win, because I have some fun with them, too. And, man, I talk a lot around here! :P

  • This is the first and only game in the series I play competitively, but I don't play characters based on tiers. I mean, I main Ike. Arguable high tier, sure. But I didn't start playing Ike because he's high tier, but because he feels right. I also secondary Fox, but again, that's because I like the feel of his gameplay, not because he's arguably top-tier.
