Does a character have to have a recent or future game in order to join Smash?

Sakurai never said that, but it seems that way.

    no i mean mario is old but hes still here and mr.game&watch hes from 1980 thats old and ryu a dlc charachters hes pretty old too

    That not what he means Mario is a old character but he has like 6 games come out everyear so like Sunshine and Galaxy are kind of old now but Bowser Jr and Rosalina show up a lot so that give them a chance to be in Smash.

    Mega Man is 3rd party. Sakurai said only one 3rd party per franchise, Mario has had recent games, Little Mac had Punch Out for the Wii and Duck Hunt and Game and Watch are retro characters.
