Bayonetta's smash?

I'm having a hard time getting Bayo's smash ball attack (demon roaring) actually going off. I know that you have to beat up the the other guy, but I never seem to do enough, fast enough. Any suggestions?

Here's what I do: Step 1:Grab an opponent and smack the living daylights outta them. Step 2:When the gauge is half full or more, D-throw. Step 3: Immediate U-Smash after D-Throw. Also, try mashing the button while the demon thing (forgot it's name) is chewing. You'll fill up another gauge that makes it deal even MORE damage.
