Does franchise relevance matter or not?

It seems like it matters in Japan because of all the FE reps, but Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Xenoblade and Punch Out are all pretty successful but they each only have one rep. Also DK is super popular and it only has two reps.

    To be honest, try adding a second Animal Crossing/Pikmin rep and see where that gets ya. Like i said, character uniqueness matters MUCH more then franchise relevance. Whoever said franchise relevance was important, try telling Sakurai that so he could remove Earthbound reps, add 9 more Mario/Pokemon reps and cut half the FE characters

    Then franchise relevance wouldn't really matter, now would it? Think about it……… if franchise relevance was so important, then why are HUGE gaming icons like Sonic and Megaman only limited to one rep per series? They've done alot for Nintendo. Then there's F-Zero and Earthbound which hasn't had a game in YEARS an they're still in Smash. Let's not mention how FE has the samd # of reps as Pokemon.

    I think Sakurai adds someone popular, whoever he thinks would have a good moveset, and then throws in some clones last minute.
