@Michael: My problem with Pain and Tobi turning into good guys is that it completely diminished the actions they previously took. Pain literally killed his mentor because he believed so strongly in his ideals. Jiraiya couldn't talk him out of it, but Naruto (a kid he doesn't even know) is able to undo decades worth of planning w/ 1 conversation? It just felt absurd to me.

Pain straight-up asked Naruto what the true path to peace is if his path is so wrong, and Naruto essentially says, "I don't know." Naruto's entire argument came across as pure emotion; an appeal to Nagato's humanity without much logic behind it. The badass Pain with enough mental trauma to despise the world was talked down by a teenager in a single conversation. It was hard for me to believe.

As for Tobi, it was even less believable. We see Tobi absorb the Juubi and lose control, only to forcefully subdue it through his sheer love for Rin. That image of seeing the Juubi rip him apart bit by bit, only for him to re-attach his limbs after remembering Rin showed how strong his resolve was; he could tame the most powerful creature in existence through sheer willpower.

We see all the setup he had to do to set everything in motion. Give Nagato the Rinnegan, assault Konoha at Naruto's birth, recruit members of Akatsuki and orchestrate them from the shadows, take on the name of Madara Uchiha and start a new war... He did all of that because he truly felt it was in the best interest for humanity and nothing would shake his resolve, not even Kakashi.

So it was beyond disappointing for me when he was converted into being a good guy by Naruto (once again, a kid he barely knew). It just seemed so ludicrously absurd that a man with his fortitude could be swayed by an 18 year old kid he has virtually no connection with. I can obviously respect your opinions if you disagree with me, but I felt the need to articulate why I find this so annoying.

No, it isn't whether it was someone they knew or not. Jiraiya's own ideals had failed in his own attempts. He barely tried much beyond fighting. There was no such conversation. Pain wanted to believe, as did Tobi, so they tested a sort of stranger they would put through what changed them, in part, and see his own decision. That's what swayed them.

Kakashi, maybe played a role in swaying Tobi. It's odd, because it seems the opposite with Sasuke ATM. He only cares for the opinions of two people. Itachi, and Naruto. Only those two are allowed to truly sway him. Anything else is a mere excuse.

@Michael: Testing them may have some merit if the suffering Naruto received was anywhere near their level. Naruto basically lost Jiraiya and Hinata (a girl he largely ignored at that point), which is nothing compared to what Pain endured. With Tobi, Naruto lost Neji (a guy he barely interacted with) and that's pretty much it. The struggle Naruto had to endure to make his decision is negligible...

when compared to most major antagonists in the series. The fact that Tobi or Pain even felt compelled to "test" their ideals is totally contrary to their nature. Tobi was willing to kill Kakashi, actually DID kill his master, and started a war that killed thousands more. Why should he care about what some kid tells him? Pain & Tobi being turned into good guys nullifies their character arcs.

Again, I can respect your opinion. It's just from my perspective Tobi and Pain's conversions were unconvincing and completely unnecessary. I guess we just have different opinions on what we want/expect from an antagonist.

Well, blast! I do sometimes forget a bit of just how much they might've faced. Yeah though... To me at least, Tobi's change makes more sense than Pain's. He kept an eye on the boy, pushed him, and saw his answer after quite the struggle. Pain just chose to believe after a single conversation., -_-' I need to think of these things more.
