  • I take it you're new? First of all, the controls. Get familiar with the controls if you aren't already. The second biggest thing is knowing how to effectively recover. Pretty straightforward, but still so important. Those are the most important, in my opinion. Of course, you can dig much deeper, though it depends somewhat on your played characters and preferred play format.

  • You should find the right 3ds system or controller that fits you.

  • the biggest thing is movement, like when running and stopping in place. ways to manuver reducing lag, especially landing lag.

  • also does anyone have online loading times that are just horrific? i can't practice against anyone when the connection isn't responsive.

  • I think a true remedy to your inexperience is to just play some matches with the cpus, or watch them, or attempt the various challenges. Cpus do some really amazing things in this game, (although frustrating) Just study them and try to attempt those things yourself. That should cover most of the basics. If you start your smash experience online, your reaction speed will be detrimentally impaired.

  • I would actually strongly recommend against using CPU's as serious practice, because they are not reflective of human players at all. They do really stupid things and the only reason they get away with that is that they are not limited by human reaction time. They also produce some seriously bad habits. Now to actually get on-topic...

  • Here's some useful movement knowledge. First, when dashing, press your shield button without letting go of the control stick to stop in place immediately, skipping skidding animations entirely. Second, you can jump out of shield, letting you skip the 7 frames of shield-drop animation. Methods for reducing endlag barely exist in this game. Landing lag is character-dependent.

  • And yes, I do sometimes have slow matches. But what I like to do is keep track of how long it takes between me selecting the format I want to play in and the game matching me up with someone. The faster it does this, the better the connection, usually. I know on 3DS, good 1v1 connections usually take about 6 seconds. If it takes much longer than that, I immediately go out to find another opponent.
