Pivoting, and pivot grabs!

I've been trying to practice pivot grabs, but I'm not sure what it is that I'm doing wrong? I know pivots basically involve running in one direction, turning around immediately to reduce turning lag, and that pivot grabs can extend your reach a little. However, when I try to that, I end up doing either f-tilt, or shield. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

  • I use the (z) button on the gamecube controller, maybe I'm not supposed to press grab immediately after turning, or do I continue dashing after turning and then press grab?

  • It doesn't help that I have no way of knowing about whether I successfully performed a pivot grab or not!

  • Really!? I got my info from smash wiki, so I guess it wasn't very thorough! So I do I press grab and immediately turn around then?

  • I've been trying to teach myself advanced techniques like different techs and pivoting, and pivot grabs! Do you know any other crucial techniques other than spot-dodges and air dodges?

  • Extended dash dancing is pretty useful. Go on the youtube channel My Smash Corner he offers lots of tech guides and character guides.

  • What exactly does dash dancing do?

  • In smash 4 dash dancing is good for mind games. Extended dash dancing gives you alot of movement options especially if you combine this with a perfect pivot.

  • I see! Is there anything else that is really worth learning?

  • If your main can create an item like R.O.B or Mega man I recommend learning jump cancel glide toss. Other than that i'm out of useful tech.

  • I main Bowser Jr/Koopalings, and I know a trick about picking up your own mechakoopa, dropping it in the air and catching it so that the explosion doesn't hurt you! Also, both of main Bowser Jr/Koopalings and Yoshi use tether grabs!

  • You dash in one direction, then while running, dash in the opposite direction (to turn) and hit Z. You don't grab before you turn. Same logic with RAR, another useful technique. Dash dancing is really only useful in Melee. Brawl and Smash 4 is too slow for there to be any real "mindgames" from it, and a lot of characters just turn around back and forth and don't move anywhere while doing it.

  • What does 'RAR' mean?

  • Reverse Aerial Rush. To do a RAR, you run, and while running, press the control stick in the opposite direction to turn around, and as soon as you do that, jump. Your character will jump backwards while keeping their running momentum. The main purpose of RARing is to attack with a back-aerial in front of your character. It's great for characters like DK, who have slow f-airs but great b-airs.

  • Okay, I think I already know how to do that, but thanks for telling me! I find both Bowser Jr's and Yoshi's B-airs to be quicker and less punishable!

  • Okay, well thank you everyone for your time and patience! One last thing though! Would any of you be willing to train alongside me in the future? I'm trying to get good enough to play semi-competively!
