What is the appeal of Melee?

I recently bought a copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee. It's good and all, but I don't see why people think it's better than Sm4sh. Can someone explain the appeal of Melee, please?

    Ah, I see. I think one of the reasons I personally don't care for Melee is because the hit-boxes feel...off compared to sm4sh.

    -Some characters were actually overpowered (Fox) compared to weaker characters (kirby) which unbalanced the game -Melee fans praised wavedashing and treated it like the most holy creation in the history of gaming -If you knock your opponent off the stage, it's a 95% guarantee for a stock since all you had to do was hold the edge and they have nothing to hold on to. -Smaller roster=less matchups

    Faster gameplay that rewards offensive play more than defensive. Y'know, like an actual fighting game.

    Melee was great for it's time...if you liked wavedashing and easy/cheap k.o.s. Imo, smash 4, or even Brawl for that matter, was more refined and balanced. Relies on you to combo and defend instead of mashing.

    It's considered the more competitive of the Smash series. Tournaments are still held for this game. If your not a big competitive player, it's still fun to see where the series has grown. Where Smash64 was more of an experiment, Melee was an attempt to improve game mechanics.
