What is the appeal of Melee?

I recently bought a copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee. It's good and all, but I don't see why people think it's better than Sm4sh. Can someone explain the appeal of Melee, please?

  • People just like it because it's more competitive.

  • Ah, I see. I think one of the reasons I personally don't care for Melee is because the hit-boxes feel...off compared to sm4sh.

  • People tend to overvalue the effort they did on muscle memory for that game.

  • -Some characters were actually overpowered (Fox) compared to weaker characters (kirby) which unbalanced the game -Melee fans praised wavedashing and treated it like the most holy creation in the history of gaming -If you knock your opponent off the stage, it's a 95% guarantee for a stock since all you had to do was hold the edge and they have nothing to hold on to. -Smaller roster=less matchups

  • Faster gameplay that rewards offensive play more than defensive. Y'know, like an actual fighting game.

  • Melee was great for it's time...if you liked wavedashing and easy/cheap k.o.s. Imo, smash 4, or even Brawl for that matter, was more refined and balanced. Relies on you to combo and defend instead of mashing.

  • Melee is faster, more offensive, technical, and combo based.

  • If you really wanna see why people like melee watch some melee tournaments.

  • It's considered the more competitive of the Smash series. Tournaments are still held for this game. If your not a big competitive player, it's still fun to see where the series has grown. Where Smash64 was more of an experiment, Melee was an attempt to improve game mechanics.
