    @robert. It means the game was developed by either an individual or a studio working independently of a major game publisher. For instance, most first-party Nintendo games are developed by in-house teams, and most major third-party titles are developed either by studios wholly owned by a major publisher, or are working for a publisher on contract.

    Shutshimi was developed by Neon Deity, and was originally self-published on XBLIG. The ports to other systems were then published after the fact by Choice Publishing... another game studio that operates outside the major publishers. The term "indie" does get a little overused, as it sometimes gets used to describe any small game, or game made by a small team...
