I just tested it and the gyro does disappear if it hits the shield. Also, I'm not really bias towards either character, I just give my 2 cents and see what people have to say. I mostly enjoy the discussion.

Just like in LoZ, any good Link will play analytically: waiting for an opening to hit hard. Unfortunately for R.O.B there are quite a few things that can leave him open and he's a fairly large character, so Link really does have many options. And I really do think you underestimate the speed of his aerials: D-Air is laggy, sure, but the rest are pretty fast and long-ranged.

Link's aerials ARE indeed faster than ROB's. But ROB's aerials, mostly Nair, out space all of Links aerials. I think it really depends on the players.

Actually, Link's aerials (save for N-Air and B-Air) have some superior range, and I like R.O.B.'s N-Air but it's startup can be...problematic. Especially since Link doesn't technically have to continue his combo with his sword alone (often times my Boomerang puts them in enough hitstun to follow up with F-Air)

You're definitely swaying my opinion though Dan. Link has a few more advantages than I took into account. I also forgot about his handy dandy, and very under utilized Zair.

It isn't your fault, bad Links just make the character look...well...bad. And I agree, aerial Clawshot is highly underrated. I can perfectly "link" it to D-Air spike on most recovering Falcons, in fact.

I'd love for a ROB main to step up and give their thoughts. Come on down! Also Dan, in your opinion, how far do you see this MU in Link's favor? 55-45? 60-40?

That's a tough call. I would say, if both players skills were even...60-40. It isn't impossible for R.O.B. to win, but Link just has the right tools, range and speed to deal with it.

Not to mention most of Link's moves involving his sword can KO easily, which kind of nullifies R.O.B.'s weight.

Insight from R.O.B. (and Link lol) main? Sure. I think it's pretty even. While yes, Link outranges him up close, good R.O.B. won't just rush at him. Actually Gyro and lasers will give Link trouble. Because Hylian Shiald only works if Link is standing (or crouching) doing nothing. And Robo Beam is much faster than any of Link's moves. He can kinda zone out Link and rack up damage with occasional...

...nair or fair. Beep-boop (down throw to up air) works for some time due to Link's relative heaviness, but so does Link's dthrow to string of utilts/usmash. Besides, R.O.B. LOVES fighting offstage. You can basically do every aerial at the right time and Link will not come back. However, like it was said before, Link does have advantage mid range. Not close, because of R.O.B's fair and dtilt...

that are fast (especially the latter), but Link can grab him and get some serious damage in due to R.O.B's height. Hovever, mid range? R.O.B. mainly has to use nair or quick projectiles of his. Not to mention you can catch gyro. So Link outranges him with fair, tilts and zair there. It's kinda the 'zone eachother out' game. Link will want to get relatively close, while R.O.B. -hit and retreat.

Yes it seems these characters need to change their playstyles up a little when facing off against one another. Truly an interesting match up.

I suppose I should give my two cents about this new discussion. Firstly, I'm fully aware that Link must stand, walk or crouch for Hylian Shield to be active, and it isn't useless if it works (it has many uses, because the hitlag is far better than using the bubble shield) it just takes correct spacing. Beep boop is pretty effective until mid high %, after that, Link's N-Air can break that combo.

And that's why you mix things up ;) But yeah, Link has advantage close range, but R.O.B's projectiles are faster than Links. And you can use gyro after a jump and actually launch it at Link's head.

Ah, but jumping and using the gyro only leaves R.O.B. open for Link to rush in and Up Smash. And R.O.B.'s projectiles may be faster, but one needs recharging and the other can be grabbed to prevent further use while Link's projectiles are still available to him, save for Bombs.

The robo beam can be fired repeatedly pretty frequently actually even though it needs recharging. And pro ROBs prefer the weaker version as it is faster. Also since ROB is faster on both ground and air I'd say it wouldn't be as simple as run in, up smash. Also ROB's offstage presence shouldn't be underestimated.

Well after looking to see what other people say online. The general consensus seems to think that this Match up is 55-45 in..........Link's favor. Congratulations Link!
