    Because Smash is a celebration of Nintendo's history, both old and new characters, and a character being included in Smash can increase their popularity and can revive their franchise i.e Kid Icarus.

    Because the franchises in question are, for the most part, still more-or-less alive, maybe, aside from maybe Game and Watch and ROB (who are probably included because of how important they are to Nintendo's history)?
