Why I dislike tiers.

Let's get to the point, I dislike tiers. Of course this could because I don't understand them. Just because it's high on a tier list doesn't mean you'll win guaranteed... It all depends on the skill level of both players. So yeah I don't like tiers.

  • I think "tiers" are the likelihood of that character winning. Like you said, it's not guaranteed in the slightest, especially if your "low-tier" opponent is really good with that character!

  • They are mostly geared towards the tournament scene, so they don't apply to For Glory as much really. They are also based on Tournament Results in most cases. And they give a good idea of which characters to expect more of. They also make you feel really good when you beat a top tier don't they?

That's not how tiers work though? It's supposed to be a guide for which characters are best suited for a tournament environment. Like yeah you can definitely win with Samus or Ganondorf, but with a top tier like Sheik or ZSS, you won't be put in disadvantageous situations nearly as often in high-level play.

  • There are certain things that can make 1 character better than another (frame data, combo potential, ko potential ect) that and tournament performance is what tiers are based on but your pure skill carries more weight than tier lists and so do specific match ups. My low tier Lucina has no problem keeping up with shiek and ZSS but I struggle against DDD and Kirby because they're just bad match ups

  • I don't pay too much attention to tier list as like you said it doesn't guarantee wins in both For Glory and in Tourneys. To be honest, looking at the tournament scene, matches that only top tier characters are used can get boring after awhile, at least for me that is. I see this mostly happening in Melee more so than in Brawl and SSBWIIU. But I do see a shift of character variety in Melee lately

  • ...and that's a good thing! A true pro uses a good variety of characters anyway. The reason I say that is that players won't get used to that pacific character(s) combos and what they are capable of too easily. To everyone else, just because I say that I don't pay too much attention or rely on the tier list, it does not mean I'm telling you to stop. If you want to, by all means, go nuts.

  • I don't like tiers because it isolates everyone into a certain group, and I don't like that at all! Yeah sure some are better than others, but putting everyone in a certain group is unnecessary, and just not worth it!

  • Its for people who lost to have an excuse.

  • Tier lists are mostly for the really competitive scene, where people will take any advantage they can get. I think it'd be awsome for a no-tier hero to be able to compete with the best, but it would ridiculous amounts of work, skill, and luck.

  • Honestly, I couldn't care less about tiers. I'm perfectly happy playing who I love, regardless of how they fare in tournaments!
