Match Analysis: Dedede vs Charizard

This time I felt like doing 2 super heavyweights. Who do you think has the advantage in this match up and why? Hash it out in the comments. I don't play either of these characters too frequently and therefore I don't know either in depth, so I'll withdraw my opinion for now.

  • So why would you say Charizard has the advantage in this match up?

  • He has quicker Midair attacks, Down Throw is better for Combos, Rock Smash is easier to to more damage to larger characters, his Up Special(Don't remember what its called) is very quick and has good launch power, and Flare Blitz is powerful, has a very far reach, super armor, and is difficult to shield against, despite recoil damage. But that's just me.

  • Yes, it is just you Naruto. Dedede definitely wins this because Charizard only has a few set-ups against Dedede. Since Charizard is also heavy, C is combo food for DDD. DDD can edge-guard C as well. C has just too much lag and barley any projectiles. Gordo can combo. Its really endless on how bad this matchup is for Charizard.

  • You forgot how bad charizard is. An up-B isn't going to save him.

  • Well, I'd say Dedede. He has just as much range as Charizard, but his hitboxes are disjointed. He has Gordos to pressure him mid-range and can even follow up from them because they often launch enemies towards DDD. Yes, they can be bounced, but well thrown Gordo is hard to hit DDD with. On the ground Ftilt of DDD is fast and has more range than Zard's faster jab. His own jab can lead to grabs and

While both has Super armor on Up B's, Charizard might have to use his jumps first to recover due to Fly's bad horizontal and average verctical height, whilst DDD can literally Up B from under the screen due to insane height of it. Besides he can throw Gordos offstage. Flare Blitz is

  • A good move, but due to DDD's weight it won't kill that early and missed Side B might result in Fsmash to the face. And that's very strong one. But Zard does have some advantages. DDD's frame data is generally bad (except Dtilt, Nair and Uair), while Char has ok one. All tilts are fast, jab, Nair and Fair too. Also, unless DDD is below Zard, the latter can challenge him in the air due to his great

He can also eat his attacks and rack up heavy damage with Rock Smash. Verdict: Dedede wins, but Charizard does stand a chance. And I really took it seriously, looking at frame data while writing and such :P

  • Dedede's Gordos can be reflected back just by attacking them, and if he comes back on the Stage with Dedede Jump, but cancels it too late, it leaves quite the opening. His down Strong attack is kind of the same if it misses.

  • King Dedede was much better in Brawl, in my opinion. He was one of my favorite characters in that game but not anymore.

  • Flare Blitz can KO Dedede before even 80%. Charizard's F-air and D-air are quicker and more powerful, his Up Smash Attack does more damage, his Side Smash Attack has very good launch power and strikes fast, and his B-air has a farther reach. You would have to be on opposite sides of the stage(most likely 8-player omega) in order for Flare Blitz to stop in front of your rival.

  • Lastly, Charizard's Up Strong Attack is quicker, has super armor and less end lag, which can juggle opponents, and While Dedede still has the most powerful rush attack in the game, its slow and can leave you wide open if you miss. But it really comes down to the skill of the players.

  • @Naruto -I meant shielding/spotdodging Flare Blitz. Still, you give good reasoning. Still think Dedede's got an advantage. But only a little. Almost even, I guess.

  • Alright after much debate on miiverse and online. The general consensus is that this match up is 55-45 in Dedede's favor! Good input from everyone!
