  • Good to see someone is enjoying this game. I have been thinking about purchasing it, but am hesitant because I do not know how it plays. I really wish it had a demo. Can you describe how the game plays at all, is it similar to anything?

  • So far I'm really liking it. They only game I've played that's similar to it is "Sky Crawlers" on Wii, but that's probably no help because it's was not well known. Ace Assault is very arcade like. Flying the plane is very simple: up, down, left, right, with one button for afterburner and one for air break. Targeting is also easy. There's nothing more frustrating than a flying game that you...

  • ...have to be a professional fighter pilot just to hit anything. That was the main problem with Sky Crawlers. It's definitely not a simulator whick in my mind is good. I find excessive realism in flying games to be tedious and frustrating. If you have an N3DS and Amiibo, it's cool unlocking the various planes and weapons. But if you don't, you'll still unlock those things as you progress...

  • So if you don't have an N3DS, you won't be missing out, you just have to work for the unlockables. One thing I think is kind of hokey is if you're tailing another plane for a while, a symbol lights up on your HUD. Then if you hit Y, your plane magically maneuvers around and puts then right in your gunsights. It totally feels like cheating! I usually don't use it unless I'm real desperate.

  • That's funny you mentioned Sky Crawlers, as that's a game that tempted me in the past. This game bring me memories of the Top Gun games from the NES - games I loved. I really like the sounds of this one. Are the missions linear ala StarFox or are they full 360 go where you want kind of levels? Did you get the retail copy? Looks to be pricier than other games. Or maybe that's just the N3DS

    Yeahs1
  • Game pricing.

  • I got the retail/physical game. And it is full 3D, free roaming; so not like Star Fox or Top Gun. It does guide you to which targets to attack, so it's not like you're wandering around clueless. But you don't have to follow orders. If the commander says to shoot down enemy fighters, but I see ground targets, I sometimes ignore him.

  • You may already know this, but this is an upgrade of an early 3DS game. If you do buy it and you want the Amiibo support, make sure your getting Ace Combat - Assault Horizon Legacy +" copywright 2015. Not "Ace Combat - Assault Horizon Legacy" from 2011.

  • Thanks a lot. I have some more thinking to do!

    Yeahs1
  • That's just the basic form. If you want more, and arguably, LESS, control, you can switch the control scheme to classic Ace Combat, turning off "hold right to go right" and such in favor of manual rolling, which requires more skill but allows more control once mastered. High-G turning is essential in this control type.

  • I didn't even know about that option. Thanks, I'll have to check it out.

  • I will have a physical copy later this week. Can't wait to try it out.

  • Dantroid, I just spent an hour on Sky Crawlers, and it is as frustrating as I remember. Targeting is completely unforgiving, and the motion control is awful (but classic controller is an option), the radio chatter is mind numbingly stupid, and I can't get past level 3! It was such a great idea, but over all, stay away!

  • Did I mention you can turn Action Maneuvers off? The default game is basically artificial easy mode. Start to tweak options, and it becomes quite a bit more difficult. This isn't relevant, I just wanted to state it.

  • Enjoying the game. I agree that the auto lock on move feels like cheating, so I avoid it. I have yet to use an amiibo.
