Its usually a purple rupee. When you get the grappling hook you can hoist them up. You treasure maps will show you where there are bigger ones that can either be silver rupees, pieces of heart, or Triforce shards.

thanks. I guess I just need to practice my grappling hook technique a bit more. I guess I should really spend some of these rupees too, looks like 500 is the max it'll let you keep. No use getting more rupees if it won't let me keep them.

You can get bigger wallets in the game for 1000 and 5000 rupees. I think you get them from fairies. Trade stuff with the Gorons for Zunari and then buy that stuff for the joy pedastals to liquidate your funds. There are a lot of rupees in this game so don't be afraid to spend them. You can get charts and hearts buy paying to play minigames. There is also a nightly auction on Windfall Island.

Found the auction, and finally won after 3 tries. You'd think pressing A would be no big deal but boy my hand was aching after that! Believe it or not this is my first time playing WW, my husband beat it years ago on the game cube. It's very different playing a game with no clear boundaries. Thanks for the tips!
