tbh i only wanted voice chat so i could do some hateful/bullying online.

Voice chat was a nice opportunity, couldn't have even been implemented with an option to switch it on/off... SIIIGH.

It'd be great to warn a friend that an enemy is right behind them. I don't understand why voice chat can't be an optional thing.

i think it should be optional, just turn it off if you're very sensitive like the dev was from a few words against him in his online experience using it, or at least allow it with friends. if a player is trash talking i just mute them, simple.

yes up and down 'c'mon' and 'booyah' are both pretty pointless call-outs anyway. 'defend the base' or 'press attack' would be better.

i'd also like the option to swap weapons after getting inked in a match, a team all playing with the same weapon doesn't help.

Either improve the D-Pad call-outs or add in VC at some point, I'd say that should've been the case from the start.

Honestly, i like no vc... I get annoyed with ranked battles, and dont want o hurt the winners feelings.

I get why folks want vc.I do feel that you should at the very least be able to chat with friends,but I don't feel that you really need vc to know whats going on in this game.As long as you pay attention to your gamepad you can easily see where help is needed and what turf needs covering....

yeah those 4 emote things would of been nice they had that in lost planet 2 and it worked great but yeah seems nintendo is always scared to do things like that as if its a die or not situation

Have to agree with those wanting 4 personal call-out messages. It would really help. Plus there would be no negatives if it were friends-only. There's been so much discussion about VC that it's surprising that they won't add it in.

Meanwhile, the makers of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the Wii U are laughing right now. It is SOOOOO possible to have voice chat on the Wii U AND be able to turn it on and off at will. It's really not that difficult.

Adding VC makes the game seem more like a stereotypical shooter like CoD. If you want that, play CoD. Also keep in mind that Splatoon is most likely targeted towards younger audiences. Kids really should not be using VC. However, I do think that "Nice!" and "Come here!" could be improved. Like in Luigi's mansion 2. Worked wonders.

So SSB has it in the character selection for online in that game, but not here? I don't care for VC myself, but stuff like this that Nintendo does makes zero sense. As does the fact that we can't use miis online in SSB. You saw other peoples' miis in an online lobby in MK8.

I have a solution to all this voice chat palava that Nintendo just loves to incorporate: Parental Controls! Having Parental Controls incorporated and allowing parents to eliminate VC from online play, should they choose to do so, would easily solve the problem. That way, kids don't hear the VC and older players can play strategically, everbody wins. But Nintendo doesn't think outside the box!

They should've added a toggle for it. That would've made the game so much better.

Splatoon will have better online matches if VC was added, but online matches are still very fun, even without VC. Its not needed, but if added, will make Online Play more fun.

Another reiteration of the same thing with voice chat? Is it really that big a deal? Yeah, it could work with Parental Control restrictions and limits to friends-only matches, and in some cases, it stinks not being able to communicate. Even so, if it's out, that's their decision, and it's not an essential feature anyway. It still seems like a crazy-fun game nonetheless.

The highlight of this post IMO is the staggered content explanation, and it makes perfect sense. At a time where gamers can blow through an entire console game's content in just a couple of days, keeping players stimulated with extra content every now and then seems ideal to keep the game from burning out too quickly. Miiverse can be negative. Many people are bullied or trolled, and it takes too long for admins to see. Should Miiverse be shut down? No? Then there's no reason not to have voice chat.

I have had some horrible experiences online with abusive peope spewing racist profanity, so I understand Nintendo protecting their family image. Don't forget how media junmped all over Nintendo when child predator used swapnote in Japan to try and lure a kid into trap, so Nintendo shut down service to protect kids. Media never reports on Sony or Microsoft or Facebook that way.

Newsflash Nintendo: Having voice chat in a game is still an option not MANDATORY. Those who like it will use it and vice versa. And please PLEASE stop talking about voice chat like it's something new everyone don't know about already.

@Ricky, you make a good point, but, I don't know about anyone else, when I say I'm fine without voice chat, I'm not agreeing with it not being there. I just think that people are making the lack of it such a big deal that they may be ignoring some of the game's better features. It would be nice to have the option, but it's not like not having the option is game-ruining.

@Robert: That wouldn't be a bad idea, except there's one problem: most parents are bad parents and don't even bother using parental controls at all. This is basically why the 2DS even exists in the first place.

It's sounds great but it isn't, you get idiots who rants towards one of your team mates and make him/her feel bad about playing the game. I suggest more communication dialog because "Nice" and "To me" isn't enough.

Even making it optional in random battles might cause trouble because people who had it off would be at a disadvantage. In friend-only battles though, I would think it would be fine to allow it, since if you know the other players you could agree to all use voice chat or not use it.

I dont like how they aren't really listening to all of their consumers... but what can ya do. Game is still great! I just wish they would stop assuming whats best for us consumers, and also be more open to all of the consumer's ideas. (There should be a VC option at least). But the game is still really fun, but there is room for even more improvement!

Thank goodness they don't have voice chat, if you {borrowed} Call Of Duty before you should know how annoying kids voices are acting like they're the best only they forget that they're still talking about a VIDEO GAME. Also since the you know how people are with the language, I still don't see why people see it as a negative, IGN gave points off of a posotive thing.

The only way voice chat could fit is by playing with friends only. I don't want to hear a person's feelings in a game, it would COMPLETELY RUIN MULTIPLAYER for me.

It's better not to have voice over Internet. I hate hearing kids chatter about whatever and music from people who have lame speakers or something. Call of Duty had taught me these things.

After watching so called core mlg youtubers play using voicechat with friends I can safely say voicechat is not needed for winning matches.With that said I wouldn't mind voicechat to converse with friends and have a great time.Bring that couch multiplayer closer to home:)

I think I enjoy the online side of the game more without the voice chat, mostly because of the aforementioned 'Elitist MLG 'get gud or go home' people who so love to crowd online servers making me feel uncomfortable playing, it's really the driving force as to why I've stayed as less of a PC gamer and more of a console gamer. i was going somewhere but now ive ran out of words for this post :v

I do understand peoples want for voice chat, but I think a simpler thing that would greatly help would be more/custom gamepad d-pad shout-outs that everyone's mentioned before, seems like something that could expand online communication without breaking the flow of gameplay like voice chat could/sometimes does

Really? At this point we're beating a dead horse. I would think after people played the game they would have realized voice chat wouldn't do much in terms of communicating strategy (this is ignoring the fact that the online is worldwide only so voice chat would be strange in a team where one guy is from North America, one guy is from Europe, and one guy is from Japan).

People are still banging on about voice chat? Maybe they should go back to their Xbones and PS4s and play some tedious grey brown shooters that are so dull they need the voice chat just to keep them awake.

I like the idea of VC but take notice of call of duty if your sensitive just turn it off plus if you have it on you can tell people what we can or can't do and make a plan like you go on the low path i'll cover you from the top they can make an objection and plan a way we would both like.

Yeah that's a bit stupid. Personally I have absolutely no desire to use voice chat, but I can DEFINITELY see why others would. It's a glaring omission which really can't be excused. Nintendo really need to stop deciding these things for us People thinking Splatoon would end up like COD if it had voice chat are hilarious

These people who are saying voice chat won't get volgar and that nintendo isn't putting enough faith in their consumers, obviously don't remember why Swapnote/letterbox's spotpass feature was discontinued. Those who say we've learned our lesson since then, obviously aren't on miiverse communities very often.

@Michael I'm not defending anything, but ask yourself, "Would Splatoon end in a different way than CoD if the former had VC?" Of course not. Voice chat should be available between friends, at least. VC with random people? Mute button or not, nothing of value is lost.

Pokemon has had voice chat since 2006, Monster Hunter 3U had voice chat and Smash Bros U had it to an extent too. Heck, the Wii U has a built in videocalling application. Nintendo AREN'T against voice chat, they're simply *choosing* not to incorporate it because they have a specific vision for how the online community in Splatoon will function. The problem is not everyone agrees.

i think with friends it is great, but otherwise it would most likely go like this: someone on one team is cussin so 2 people turn of the chat, the other person on that team wanted to make a strategy, but the cussin guy wouldn't listen, and the other 2 peeps dont have it on, and the other team wins cus they decided to just listen to it and ruin their brains.

yes it's worldwide so unless u speak a lot of other languages it wouldn't be very useful, but if they add friends lobbies you'd speak the same lingo. yes it's not really important in turf war as it's fast paced and just look at the pad to see where ya need to be, but if they add other game modes like capture the hill, different zones, or something requiring strategy voice chat would be useful yes

Don't get me wrong, I'm supporting the concept of VC with mute buttons, but it's NO BIG DEAL at the end of the day. Now what Nintendo should patch in is VC with friends. That should be a given, yet many people would still complain.

"You can warn your teammate that an enemy is behind him/her" That wouldn't be too... effective. For you to effectively warn your teammate, you must be beside that teammate. Remember, you can't see enemies on the GP screen.

There's been plenty of times when I could have done with voice chat to tell teammates where we need to be going to win. VC should definitely be added to friend only games. Also those dpad commands should be made to actual useful ones, good thing about that is it translates as well.

Coming from someone who played alot of counterstrike,cod domination,unreal tournament and halo 3 ctf.Its doesn't make a difference if you have and don't have voice chat.A shelfess gamer who only cares about there k/d would not listen no matter how much you yell hey defend the base!When your on a good team the use of voice chat is lil to known existence.Everything just clicks!Still voice chat...
