In the comments (spoilered) I will detail some stuff about the abilities and which ones are worth having. Bear in mind that at LV20 you can get Spyke to give you an extra ability slot or reroll an ability.

Main ability = 3x sub-abilities, e.g; Ink (Main) main ability has the same power as 3 Ink (Main) sub-abilities. There is a significant diminished return on anything greater than 3 so do not go above 1 main ability or 3 of one sub-abilities, e.g; do not have Ink (Main) main AND Ink (Main) sub!

Best abilities: Ink Saver (Main): One of the best abilities as you will be using your main weapon a lot. Ink Saver (Sub): Also one of the best abilities, depending on how much you use your sub-weapon. Swim Speed Up: Makes squid form swimming faster. Top tier ability! Special Charge Up: Makes your Special gauge fill faster. Useful the entire fight. Top tier!

Situational abilities to consider: Ink Recovery Up: If your playstyle sees you running short on ink a lot, get it. Most useful for rollers I reckon. Run Speed Up: Should be moving in squid form and this affects inkling form. It’s handy in firefights. Might want if you’re into head-on confrontations.

Last Ditch Effort: Doubles effectiveness of Ink Saver Main and Sub for the last 30 seconds. Very handy in Turf Wars! Might not even activate in Ranked though. Tenacity: Slowly fills your Special if your team has less players. Can be very useful. Ninja Squid: Move undetected in squid form but at a slight speed reduction. Both effects last the entire match. Worth considering.

Avoid: Damage Up: Minor boost. Only (maybe) worth it with high damage weapons like a .52 Gal. Defense Up: Not enough boost to typically let you take more hits than normal. Quick Respawn: As ideally you should avoid dying, this should be pointless. Have some gear with it if you’re struggling as you’ll spend more time active but don’t use it for ultimate gear.

Special Saver: Decreases your Special gauge reduction on dying. Again, as you shouldn’t be dying, this “should” be pointless. Quick Super Jump: You probably won’t be super jumping enough for this to be worth it. Comeback: Boosts all stats slightly for a short time after respawn. Again, you don’t want to be dying.

Cold Blooded: Shortens the amount of time tracking effects last on you. Typically you won’t get much milage out of this. Haunt: Reveals location of your killer to team for a while after being splatted. Again, you don’t want to be dying.

Recon: Shows location of enemy inklings while you’re on spawn point. You don’t want to be dying to land there and you don’t want to waste time running there when there’s work to do. Bomb Sniffer: Reveals traps set by opponent. There’s no guarantee they’ll even be using any and you can do without.

Stealth Jump: Jumping will not reveal your landing point to enemies. Useful but you won’t be jumping that much.

Another top ability (messed up the comment so I'm reposting); Ink Resistance Up: Speed reduction and damage while in enemy ink are reduced. One of the best abilities!

Repost: Special Duration Up: Depends on your Special. It’s useless for Inkstrike but handy for Inkzooka for instance. Bomb Range Up: Handy for throwing from safer distance or over obstacles but not as useful as some other abilities. Opening Gambit: This doubles your swim/run speed for 30 seconds. Depending on your tactics this is said to be top tier. Personally I don’t see how rollers need it.
