Well, I've been told that in order for video game companies to stop selling us “broken” or “incomplete” games, I need to stop financially supporting that sort of irresponsible practice. Somebody also told me that this game is apparently not yet finished & that there will be several DLC packages in the near future, but whether or not those packages are free in cost is debatable. Some questions:

They add extra missions, arcade games, and a few nice suits of gear (as far as I know). I wish they were more superficial like in Mariokart. Personally, I'm withholding judgement on their decision until I get around to researching their reasons further.

Do you really think they'll shed light on those reasons though? Maybe they already have, who knows. It seems kinda unfair to have to buy Amiibos in order to unlock those things. Have video games done that in the past?

That I don't know - I admit I haven't done any due diligence in fully reading into it. Yeah, the extra Amiibo missions aren't that big a deal, but having access to gear that non-Amiibo owners can't buy certainly rubs me the wrong way, but once a player gets high enough in level to access better stuff, the difference becomes a superficial one as well.

Plenty have done that before. It's a monetization strategy that, while I'm not a fan of, I can be okay with provided it's treated as an extension to an already full game. That's what expansions were for older computer games back in the 90s, for example.

Also, sorry if I'm a little scatterbrained in my thoughts, I've got some downtime at work and I'm typing on my phone, so I can't express thoughts to the best of my abilities, heh.

Game devs just get lazy and want you to complete the game with DLC. I would know, I get screwed over by Call of Duty every year.

Splatoon feels like a finished game to me, but I do have serious issues with locking missions behind Amiibo purchases. It irks me and the only reason I bought Splatoon is because Nintendo is somewhat new with this stuff, so I will give them a little slack at first. And besides, MK8 DLC is probably the most amazing DLC I've had the pleasure of purchasing.

I don't find this game incomplete. There are 2 modes, Ranked and Turf War, and offline mode, Octo Valley, all of which are spectacular and do not get boring. They promised us free DLC, and they are giving us new weapons, new modes (Ranked battle), and new stages. There is plenty more to come, so I don't feel as if Nintendo is giving us an 'incomplete game.' I think they just wanted to release the

game sooner than later. About amiibo's, I don't find it unfair because the amibos will likely have other uses in other games, and Nintendo needed a reason for people to buy them in Splatoon. If you enjoyed the demo, then I recommend you to buy it.

well cheeky nintendo don't tell us that this game is an early access, includes the camping as a glorified tutorial, one mode friendly(turf wars) and one competitive (ranked matches) with no other than 2 maps to play online *ouch* and with several updates they still keep adding more maps and weapons, and with that last thing was pretty clear that this game is early access my only hope is that they fix

I don't mean to [insert vulgar synonym for defecate here] on everyone's replies here, but I feel like everyone might be dancing around the real answer to my question: Is this an incomplete game? I've received answers like “It *feels* complete” & “It's what we call ‘early access’,” but how does Splatoon fit into the larger schema of shady video game industry practices? Is there DLC? What's going on

Is it incomplete? Yes. After some online reading, I suspect they had to do things this way due to a marketing push for a big summer release, and weren't able to fine tune the game. I guess the weekly/bi-weekly updates are a way for them to make sure content remains balanced and also to gauge how the online environment grows and expands in a domain that they've little experience in. [...] I wouldn't say it's "shady business practices" as much as it is a matter of Nintendo's inexperience with online and the highly competitive console market. As for DLC: Yes, via Amiibos, which offer access to unique gear (aesthetics), arcade game modes (minor content), and challenge modes for single player levels.
