Forget Mother 3. Apparently Nintendo has REALLY been holding out on us.

  • Yep, the localization was done years ago, but went unreleased until now lol

  • I'm pretty sure Super Mario Bros 7 is a bootleg.

  • Actually the original Japanese version the line actually has a different game, they ask about Dragon Quest 7 or at least any Dragon Quest game nearing release around that point in Japan, unlike most changes which revolved around censorship because of violence or religion, this is the only one edit in localization that was changed due to copyright reasons as Square (before they became Square-Enix)

  • owned Dragon Quest and it was still years before they and Nintendo would team up to create the first Mario RPG (in any rare case you don't know the game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars which as I said was still years away) despite Square only really releasing their games on the NES at the time, so they pretty much had to replace the line with something Nintendo actually had ownership

  • over, it does raise a good question why they didn't use a Super Mario Bros. numbered sequel close to this game's almost stateside release, especially since if it was close to Super Mario World it would make sense to use the title Super Mario Bros. 4 as that's what Super Mario World was called in Japan.

  • well the only localization edit due to copyright reasons I can think of off the top of my head, as I can't really think of anything else in this game changed in this game's localization due to Nintendo not having ownership over something like a different developer's game, which is strange since in Earthbound (even in the English localization) there were games and sound effects from games that

  • that Nintendo didn't own, in the Onett Arcade which were even kept in the Wii U re-release, yet nothing bad came of the references to those other titles in Earthbound in either the first time it was released, or when it was re-released on the Wii U, so Square must of really kept a tight leash on their stuff like Dragon Quest back then, especially since not even their RPGs were profitable in

    Yeahs0
  • America along with every other RPG throughout the 8-bit through 16-bit era so that's really saying something if even the American side of Square was that tight with ownership over a game in a genre that wasn't selling at the time.
