  • The literal translation of 'katana' is 'sword(s)'. When north americans say 'katana' they should really be saying 'Japanese sword' because claymores, buster sword, short sword, cutlasses, etcetra, are all katana. And I've seen a longer Japanese sword in a Final Fantasy anime.

  • … Random post is random. Furthermore, the screen shot is AFTER her attack, so your statement is, by all means, wrong. Additionally, everyone knows the cake is a lie.

  • A "fun" post that was random, out of place, and made little to no reference to the conversation. I don't make random posts in your topics, don't make random posts in mine.

  • Kinda wrong about the use of the word "katana", actually. Wakizashi is also a Japanese sword and no Japanese person would correctly use "Katana" to refer to it. So how can it be possible that they would refer to a Claymore as a Katana? Katana is any curved single-edged sword or "Japanese bladed weapon" (Nihonto) thats between 2-3 shaku long. Ken or Tsurigi is usually used more generaly for sword.

  • But besides that, if you only want to call them "Japanese swords" do you also only use the term "Japanese comics"? Why not say "cute/little familiar nerd" instead if "otaku-chan"? Or tomato sauce intead of ketchup, which is Chinese? Anime, manga, and katana have become their own english words of foreign origin.

  • Catsup. And Otaku refers to an avid fan, not a cute or familiar nerd. I'm a fan of Animations, Comics, games, Nintendo, amung other things. Even 'Anime Fan' alone is too long for Miiname input, let alone inaccurate. And just 'Fan' makes me sound like Lamp's sister.

  • "Otaku", for Japanese people, IS pretty much the equivalent of "nerd", and kinda before it became a trendy quality to boot (as in still stereotyed as putting their obsessive interests before even hygiene). The "cute" thing was just me being excessive and getting into the "-chan" part of your name, lol. I get it would be too long to fit, I was just trying making a point.

  • Your point falls short, due to space limitations. And -chan is an honourific, it doesn't mean 'cute' and is one of the most common honourifics. Kawaii means cute. Kowai means scary\creepy.

  • I know My point again: Katana, Anime, Otaku, etc are fine used the way they are by non-Japanese because they've taken on their own english definitions. Chan is a suffix added to names of younger family members or close friends who you find cute or endearing. Japanese people rarely use it to refer to themselves either. But like I said, all these words have come to mean their own thing in english.

  • If you don't use a honourific in Japan with someone you're not intimate with, it is considered insulting. I think you're confusing -chan with -tan.

  • I think you should look into this more >_<'. I think you're thinking of san. Chan is a diminutive suffix used in place of san when referring to people you know that are children, girls, or grandparents, who have cute qualities. Even then, there are actually times when any suffix isn't necessary and even times it's rude, such as referring to oneself (you get honored by others, not honor yourself).

  • That said, some girls do apply chan to themselves, if referring to themselves in the 3rd person among known friends and other girls, in order to emphasise their own cuteness/childishness. Look, I don't care if you name yourself that way for whatever reason and use it however you want, for reasons going back to my point, but I'm just explaining why I translated it the way I did.
