    Actually, if I understand correctly, the dog vs dog matches had no impact on the end score and were just to keep you from having to wait 15 minutes between matches while you were trying to rank up your title, so while good players getting caught up in dog eat dog matches was probably a factor, it probably wasn't as big as you imagine.
