I just thought of something... What if the reason this game isn't on 3DS VC is because Nintendo is planning to release an EarthBound Trilogy on 3DS after Mother 3 is translated?

    I think they decided to go the only wii u route because Wii U was not selling well, a smash was coming out (ness is a character) and it is a passionate community. Since earthbound was wii u only, it would make sense to launch mother as a wii u exclusive as well.

    I know. My point is not that it would not make sense to launch Mother 3 or the games on the 3DS, it probably would, but we gotta keep in mind that translating a rpg is costly. Mother 1 and 2 were already translated. But so far it made sense to keep it Wii U only because the Wii U console was hurting and earthbound's community is very vocal, which could help promote the console

    They might release it on 3ds in a few months on the vc, apparently that happened with adventures of lolo. I hope not though. I pretty much bought a wii u for mother 1.

    Those are my thoughts exactly, just as the 3DS Metroid spinoff can be in preparation for something bigger. It has happened before.
