    If they're going for a retro NES style, they should also conform to the 3 color per sprite limit the system had. Also, the NES didn't have "trademark Toad colors". Y'know how many it had? 64. And 10 of them were black.

    Most modern sprites conform to a grid-like structure. It pretty much defines sprite art as a whole. BUT NOT NINTENDO CUZ THEY'RE COOOOOOL.
