Sometimes, single enemies will appear off-center if there is a chance they will call for help. You may have noticed this with the bats as well.

A lot of dragon quest enemies were small like that, probably to make the big bad that much more intimidating. Earthbound Beginnings went completely nuts, with Giegue's spaceship being bigger than a skyscraper.
