    Yes. Stephen Hillenburg, the original creator of Spongebob, has explicitly stated that Squidward is actually an octopus, not a squid. This makes sense since his head is large and bulbous like an octopus, he has long pupils like an octopus, and his nose expands and contracts when he laughs which mimics an octopus' mantle when breathing.

    Squids have 10 tentacles, so hes twice as far from having enough tentacles to be a squid as he is an octopus. He has six tentacles because it was easier to animate and made Squidward look less complicated in design.
