she was the ruler of the Twilight Realm until Zant (aided by an exiled Ganondorf) dethrowned her and turned her into an imp and sent her to the light world (hyrule). zant then turned all the twili into beasts and forced them to take over hyrule (ganondorf's wish).

she finds link turned into a wolf and trapped in the hyrule dungeon by the twili beasts and agrees to set him free if he does her bidding from here on out with no questions asked. after about half the game and zelda sacrificing herself to save midna. midna has a change of heart and decides to help Link in saving Hyrule and the Twilight realm. once defeating Gannondorf she returns to her true form.
