    I also always thought you could only raise a Chao by connecting with some sort of GBA Sonic game. And i don't think i ever noticed there was a shop. So to me the Chao Garden always felt useless up until now.

    No, the Lost World level in Sonic Adventure. It also has the voice clip in the song. Same as the Sand Hill mini game in Sonic Adventure. Sonic Lost World doesn't have that sound in it.
