    They were planned to be alt. costumes. However, it would be weird to see Dark Pit using the Three Sacred Treasures, plus he has some differences from Pit. Lucina would've been an alternate costume for Marth, but a bit shorter and a sword strong all-around. They had to make Lucina into a character due to those differences.

    Lucina was made a character because of the slight differences between her and Marth's physics. And Dark Pit.....I don't know.

    They actually were going to be (along with Dr. Mario), but they decided to make them separate characters due to having to implement slightly different moves, like Dr. Mario's neutral-B and Dark Pit's neutral and side-B. But Lucina didn't get any different moves, so it baffles me why she wasn't an alt.

    It seems that the only one we really needed was Lucina because they needed a female Fire Emblem character, and she was completely different, but Dr.Mario and Dark Pit are plain out clones.
