    Yep! Lots of conduit :P This is a drawing of a Simplex Fire Alarm NAC Extender tied in to a Simplex 4010 Fire Alarm Control Panel, which is tied into a Simplex Fire Communicator.

    Does this pre-date smoke alarms or is it wiring for an extensive set-up, like for a huge factory, high-rise or large ware-house? It just seems too complex for a single family dwelling.

    No, this is a Commercial grade system. There are plenty of Fire Alarm System Tests on youtube that test these systems. I have a similar system in my house, because i collect Fire Alarms. The Simplex 4010 panel would be good for an average building, however, high-rise buildings would need at least a Simplex 4100U or 4100ES or 4100IA series control panel.
