Good gameplay, corny storyline.

  • Aren't those two plots synonymous with one another? Wow, for what was initially just a for fun post I made to test the Play Journal feature its has surprisingly grown into a decent discussion. If only it weren't because of the darn post limit.

  • @david Sacred Stones is a bit cliche. At least in terms of its villain. That said, I still like the story. We don't constantly need thought-provokers, and there weren't a lot of facepalm moments, if any. (And an entire one Deus ex machina, admittedly.)

Honestly... I don't care if a plot has clichés (well, as long as there aren't TOO many) as long as the overall story is compelling, interesting and entertaining. To me, Awakening was those things, so that didn't matter. Besides, clichés are mostly unavoidable in media nowadays, and are they always such a bad thing? Oh, cr@p, I have only one more post left today... great.

  • Honestly, I didn't like Awakening's story because not only are there a lot of cliches, it doesn't really do anything interesting with whatever else it had. I get that a lot of plot points are supposed to be references to other games (Say'ri and Yen'fay are obvious references to Minerva and Michalis), but they just overall felt sorta boring and unexplored, with the lack of story focus.

  • There are a lot of Fire Emblem cliches (as in, cliches contained to Fire Emblem), so you can't quite call them out on that. Missing the potential I'll give you.

  • The story was pretty weak, but I think the characters made up for it. Not only was the characterization top notch, but the chemistry between cast members was hilarious. The characters were by far and away better than those from all previous Fire Emblem games to me, rivaled only by those from the Raidant games. For once, I truly cared when a party member died.

  • The characters were the reason why I got this game in the first place. If it hadn't been for Lucina and Robin in SSB4, I wouldn't have considered buying this game. It was worth it even though I don't play it much these days.

  • Out of curiosity, which difficulty modes did you beat it on (Both the "standard" and Classic/Casual.)

    Yeahs2
  • I played lunatic casual in new mystery and supeingly beat it with an A in tatics and speed, but an E in survival for obvious reasons, but in that game, lunatic' (lunatic reverse according to fans, later dubbed lunatic+) I have yet to unlock to requireing a lunatic classic playthrough!

  • *tatics. darn typos! also I suck at classic unless it's the original dark dragon and the sword of light, which I beat with only 1 death somehow. compared with the tellius games where I only had Ike and some late game troops both times.

  • I beat the game on Classic mode. Since this was the first time I played it, I wasn't ready to deal with the permanent loss of units. I might try the standard move in a future playthrough.

  • *Casual I did that too, though that was more because I was awful at Fire Emblem (still am) rather than I didn't want to lose units (that's what resetting's for).

  • I suck at classic too like I said, so it came as a surprise when I beat FE1 without a death or got good ratings on a casual lunatic new MoTE runthrough. considering I cut it close with tellius and sacred stones...

    Yeahs1
  • "without a death" I meant without all but one death.

  • I actually thought the story was very well done. Yes, there is always "the end boss is really a powerful evil deity bent on destroying the earth," in Fire Emblem games, but the way the writers lead up to that final battle is what made it interesting. And the dialogue, oh the wonderfully clever dialogue.

  • To me, it just took a backseat to the gameplay. Its what actually hook me into the game. The plot itself was just a bonus.

  • It's about 50/50 for me, I always like to see how a good story plays out.

  • The characters played a good part on the appeal too, moreso than the plot. I would rank it like this: Gameplay > Characters > Plot.

  • The plot and/or other related elements are needed if you've got an RPG. Otherwise you can throw it out the window for all I care. I'd say that you don't strictly need a plot at all but then we got Sticker Star.

    Yeahs2
  • It's also worth noting that, weak as the plot is, the lead-up and execution of the final battle was masterfully done. They couldn't have done it any better.
