    You shouldnt be so black and white about it. Thats been done to death. Splatoon isnt meant to be like other games and the splatfest in itself is so unique that a unique method to determin the winner was needed. I really love the originality of this developer, could be the next miyamoto.

    The Splatfest is usually about winning battles for your team, not how many people join your team. Hot Dog won by battles, the main part, but we won by popularity, making us win the entire Splatfest.

    And to be honest we won popularity by like 20% more. You gotta remember that there were so few hot dog likers that us marshmallows ended up playing each other a TON of the time. They needed a way to be able to include all those "intended" ranked matches. I think its rather brilliant myself to have a popularity score.
