    The one on the left is a fox. They are based on Japanese myths. Kitsune (fox) and tanuki (raccoon) can shape-shift. They probably were chosen because the player characters change between squids and kids.

    @Cole: Specifically, it was Red Fox Udon vs. Green Tanuki Soba, two brands of noodles made by Maruchan and old in Japan. (Udon noodles totally taste better than soba noodles.)
