I'm surprised no one has mentioned that their butts are in both shots. Surprisingly modest Miiverse is surprisingly modest.

To look more human? anyway, maybe the ones in charge of textures painted them like humans (since they're used to do it quickly) instead of boneless creatures and didn't know they didn't have bones and it went unknown through the game development process and there we have it, just have a little mistake/accident there

Or it might be cartilage. Technically kinda not bone. *shrugs* Whatever it is, it's probably a design choice, like you said.
