  • Probably because very popular people played it, and newcomers, they all made history with it, and quite a lot of money too

  • Super Smash Bros. Melee is known for being one of the most popular competitive games of all time. It has the history, the community, and the strength to be up there with the likes of Street Fighter and other popular fighting games. Melee's mechanics allow for a faster neutral with natural combos. It's not that hitstun in longer in Melee, it actually has the same hitstun in Brawl and Smash 4. The

  • Difference is that gravity is heavier, so characters fall faster. There are advanced techniques like L-canceling which reduce the landing lag of aerials and wavedashing which has multiple uses, one of which is to help you move faster to follow your opponent. All of these and more combined means that you are able to hit your opponent faster after your last hit, so it still is in hitstun and it

This not only makes gameplay exciting and engaging, but it also means things like comebacks, conversions, and combo breakers gives the game an unexpectedness that always puts the audience on the edge of their seat. The gameplay is also very exciting for the players. Melee was made in 2 years so there are alot of oversights within the game's engine. Whether or not you want to

  • call them glitches or exploits is up to you (yes, there is a difference), but i firmly believe they are not glitches. The game has an incredibly high skill ceiling but low skill floor. This means in is very easy to pick up and start playing, but it takes a very long time before you start improving drastically. The amount of depth the game has means learning to play and get better is like a journey

  • At any given situation in any game of Melee, a character has a MINIMUN of 50 distinct movement, offensive, or defensive options they can do. You really have to put in a big effort to get good at the game, but it becomes worth it. Lastly, Melee became big because of passion. During the early days of the competitve scene (04-06), Melee used to be on the MLG circuit. These players had a taste of what

When Brawl came out, it was very degrading towards the Melee players, and they saw it as Sakurai trying to disown them as true Smash fans. For a while around 07-08, Melee was considered a dead community. Melee players were forced in the shadows, only allowed to play with their friends or in a small corner at a Brawl tourney. There was

  • Melee has hard to pull off exploits so the skill gap between casual and expert is massive that's why it's highly competitive. Smash 64 has no side specials, no air dodging and a really small roster; it's fun but it's archaic compared to the later games in the series.
