I saw a theory by Vortex today trying to explain the Hero's Downfall Timeline. It's pretty interesting. I'll briefly explain it here, but those interested should watch the video, obviously.

    The Hero's Downfall Timeline is the original timeline. In this timeline, Zelda did not receive a prophetic vision. Therefore, she didn't recognize Link and they didn't work together to stop Ganondorf. Link ended up not getting the Master Sword or stopping Ganondorf, and was defeated when he finally faced him. Near the end of timeline, Hyrule is in decline and the Zelda from Link's Adventure makes

    a wish on the Triforce to change the past. This ends up being the prophetic dream that Zelda receives.

    Firstly, it seems an odd wish to make. The Triforce could surely restore the present Hyrule, at least to some degree. Secondly, Zelda never has the full Triforce. Link could have lent it to her at the end of Link's Adventure, I suppose. Or Link himself could be the one who made the wish.

    Another question is whether the Triforce has the power to change time. I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say it can. After all, the Ocarina of Time, a weaker relic, was able to change time.

    All in all, I think this is one of the more interesting theories out there. I think it's the only way to explain the Hero's Downfall Timeline without resorting to downgrading it to a "what if" scenario or using the many-worlds interpretation.
