    my theroy is that they crashed into the onions and since the ship has never seen a pikmin oninon it couldn't detect it which explains why the red onion is stuck when you find the red pikmin

    Thanks sincerely for the thought. The presented possible explanation for the stuck red onion is particularly interesting. Surprisingly, I don't recall ever wondering why it was up on the branch in the first place.

    The narrator mentions the crash again at the end of the game, but the explanation behind it is never really given. It might have some connection with the Plasm Wraith, but who knows. Maybe Pikmin 4 will have the answer.
