    That's just RNG being jerkish, not necesaraily something inherent to prepromotes. I've heard that they are actually usually pretty awesome, especially Marcus here and Seth in Sacred Stones.

    Ditto what Joshua said. Though Marcus does have the disadvantage of having admittedly poor growths (especially in Spd, and Def); a fact that cause some people (read: casuals) to (unfortunately) underestimate his ability. But his growths are "good enough" to let him remain usable for a good chunk of the game. Which his helped by the fact that he's a Paladin.
