    Any of the 4 Combat Lifes are great starting points; Wizard, Paladin, Mercenary or Hunter. Or any of the Gathering Lifes; Woodcutter, Miner, or Angler. I don't really recommend starting off with any of the Crafting Lifes [Cook, Tailor, Blacksmith, Alchemist or Carpenter], 'cause it can be a bit expensive and difficult to rank up with in the beginning.

    But hey, if there's a certain Life that's really calling to ya, just go ahead and go for it! You can jump around between all the Lifes whenever you want, so you are free to do whatever you please!

    I started as tailor, which got me some great defense for the beginning (though blacksmith is good for the long run) I would suggest Paladin, Wizard, or maybe a miner (Good for blacksmithing weapons and armor later)
