  The Black Eel has an Exceptional stat set that gives it a powerful combination of strengths offset by low submerged speed (slower than a Garfish) and average Health (below average for a long range Sub). In fact its higher dive rate gives it a stat spread more like a medium ranged sub than a long ranged one. Its low submerged speed is partially compensated for by its superb surface speed.

  It also possesses a great reload rate that optimizes its offensive output by matching the fire rate for long range subs. This means it is impossible to improve its firepower with either Gunslingers or Torpedo Aces. The high surface speed is best used in chasing down foes, joining allies or occasionally as part of an escape tactic. A mechanic is a natural fit for a sub that likes surface time.

  Because of its low speed and average health it relies on dive evasion for survival making Diver D a natural fit. Extra Masker(s) also can help survivability and the surface time will help keep high masking availability. Masker A has the added benifit of reducing the surface time needed for sufficient air to mask. Searcher can help to identify targets at long range and work with teammates.

  While running a Seadog to help its low speed sounds tempting the result is still pokey and the crew slot would be better used focusing of the Eels strengths. The base version has 4 crew slots, which is reasonable but fans who often use it will appreciate a remodel to increase their options.

  I have just been wondering how to optimize this thing. Surfaced SPD is great. The time it takes to chamber a new l.r. torpedo is rough. The slim profile (i.e. not a behemoth like Walrus/Z) is a big asset. The 3 SPD submerged is barely enough to reposition while masked. However, I've never been on a very good run with this thing and default back to the 'Tide. (Which is even slower submerged.)

  I can't roll into WW with a sub with less than 8 base health, so I've never even attempted to use the Eel.
