Yoshi's Woolly World

Theory: Yoshi games usually take place in the past, including Woolly World, since you encounter Baby Bowser. Who's to say that this overweight Koopa isn't a young Kent C. Koopa from Paper Mario? He's squinting, so he could probably use a pair of glasses after all. But that's... just a theory! A GAME THEORY!

I gotta play this game soon! My brother has it (And one of the Amiibo!) so I can play it whenever, but... School, work, SmileBASIC, GAAAH! I'm sure I can find time, it's just I've never had this much going on at once before and I'm having a hard time managing my time responsibly, but once I get into a good pattern, I should have plenty of free time!

Also, have you by chance tried out the Gravity Falls 3DS game? It released yesterday, but I haven't really seen any impressions or reviews on it. I really want to get it, but of course it's a licensed game so I'm a little wary.

Woolly World is easily one of the most visually-impressive Wii U games I've played. I'd put it right up there with Tropical Freeze and Rayman Legends in terms of graphics. I've never been a huge fan of the easy, collectible-filled levels of Yoshi games, but the multiplayer co-op is great, the amiibo patterns are really cool, and there are lots of neat gameplay mechanics in most levels. It's the...

...first new Wii U game I've been satisfied with in a loooong time. And no, I haven't gotten the Gravity Falls game yet. I plan to at some point, provided the reviews are good. I could get it as soon as this week, or just wait till Christmas, I've been pretty busy with school, too, (Accelerated Algebra II is the devil!) and I already have Woolly World and Super Mario Maker, as well as Splatoon...

Well, I ended up buying the Gravity Falls game after all, and I have to say, I'm very satisfied! I was a bit skeptical at first, ("Allow me to put on my... SKEPTICALS!") but the game is actually pretty good. The gameplay is fine, but nothing terribly special. What really wins me over is just how much the game captures the essence of the show. The character dialogue is just as humorous as in the...

...show, (See my latest posts.) but the lack of voice acting sort of takes away from it. The visuals are beautiful (Well, as beautiful as a 3DS game can be, anyways.) and there are a lot of neat details scattered throughout the game. If you go downtown, you can see a couple of Wendy's friends spraypainting graffiti on the wall of a building in the background and Soos' abuelita can be seen...

...sitting on a bench, talking to Lazy Susan. There are all kinds of neat little touches like that. I'm afraid the game might end up being really short, though, as I've already collected one of the four Gnome Gemulets in just an hour of play time, and there are only two save files. There also doesn't seem to be any boss fights, which disappointed me. I wanted to be able to fight Bill Cipher or...

...the giant Gideon robot, or the Fight Fighters dude, or the Multibear! Granted, I'm not far into the game, so I guess there COULD be bosses down the road, but I doubt it. Most of the game music I've heard has sort of a Western feel to it, which I don't much care for, but it's not horrible. Some of the music is decent, Aside from the apparently short length, lack of bosses, and no voice acting...

...I don't really have any complaints. But if I really am ¼ of the way done with the game in one hour, that might not be enough to justify the $30 retail value for you. I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for the impressions! I was watching some gameplay, and looking at some of the Miiverse screenshots and was just thinking, "Wow, this game is beautiful!" It seemed pretty slow paced, and I didn't like how the dialogue would pause the entire game, but I just assumed that, since it was just the first 10 minutes, the game was only just getting the player started. Also, I'm sure I've seen...

A screenshot with a boss in it, or was that just something that *looked* like a boss but actually wasn't? Anyways, I'd like to think the first gemulet is really easy to get, and then the rest take longer and are more difficult. Either way I'll probably get the game, the graphics are amazing, and since Alex Hirsch is involved I know the dialogue will be good!

No problem. I really hope you're right about the bosses. And yeah, the dialogue is really funny, but like I said, having to read it instead of hearing it in the actual characters' voices kind of takes away from it. By the way, a while back, I saw a picture online of Alex Hirsh with the guy who voices Dipper, and they were wearing Mario and Luigi hats, playing Smash Bros. at what looked to be...

...Comic Con. So apparently, they're big Nintendo fans, which is awesome! Although it shouldnlt come as a surprise, given the "Hey, look, listen!" quote from "D, D & More D," which was a Zelda reference.

Just noticed a similarity between Woolly World and Yoshi's Island. In YI, a Koopa Troopa has magic cast on it to become a Mario Bros.-style turtle, and you beat that boss by ground pounding it's stomach. On this Koopa Paratroopa in YWW, it has a bandage on it's stomach, and it sort of looks like the Koopa Troopa boss from YI. Yoshi canon confirmed.

I don't think I ever got that far in the original Yoshi's Island, but yeah, there could be something behind that. Although I would've guessed Woolly World chronologically came before Island, given the babies (excluding Bowser) are nowhere to be found.

It could be sandwiched between YI and YI (DS), as there could be a time between there where the Yoshis could have another adventure. Depends on if the Yoshis are the same as those in Yoshi's Island.

Or maybe it happened in the ridiculously-short time period between Island and New Island, while the stork was carrying the babies to the wrong house. Bowser was apparently much quicker at formulating and carrying out plans back then.
