So that's 5-3: Turnabout Academy completed. Once again Dual Destinies doesn't disappoint, delivering me another great case, even though it has some flaws. My full review is in the comments, but as a warning: There will be spoilers! If you haven't completed Turnabout Academy yourself, I advise not reading.

…Phoenix (AA1) and Apollo (AA4) were the same way when they got their starts. Probably my biggest issue with Athena is her objection theme. I just don’t get that awesome “Alright, I’ve gained the upper-hand at last!” rush of adrenaline when I hear it, instead I get more of an upbeat “Don’t give up, we can still win this!” feeling. It’s not bad by any means, but it misses the mark a bit…

…Other strengths 5-3 has for me include the artistic direction. I mentioned earlier how the locations of some of the other cases look kind of dull and lifeless to me, but 5-3 looks a lot more alive, and it complements the new 3D models well. The introduction of “Apollo Justice ~ I’m fine” is appreciated too (I mean, I’ve been listening to it for 45 minutes, need I say more?). Now then…

…the negatives for 5-3 are, again, pretty few and far between. That said, when you actually get Professor Means on the stand I don’t think he makes for a very intimidating opponent, and for that matter, I had my suspicions about him from the beginning, in fact he’s probably the most obvious guilty party in Ace Attorney history. A few puzzle solutions are really vague (don’t get…

…me started on Mean’s first testimony, ugh), the Mood Matrix is capable, but I’d still take Apollo’s Bracelet (which is used several times in this case, much to my delight, forgot to mention that) and Phoenix’s Magatama any day over it, Athena’s character leaves a bit to be desired, even though I do like her overall, and is it just me, or is some of the voice acting in this case horrible?...

…Athena’s voice actress is hit or miss with me, and Hugh breaking down towards the end was so bad I had to put down my 3DS to laugh. My biggest issue with 5-3 was…yeah, it’s unmemorable. It isn’t bad or anything, and I almost want to play it again just writing about it, but in the long run I don’t think it has much staying power. It’s a lot like 5-2 in that it’s a standard issue Ace…

…Attorney case that’s pretty solid but doesn’t have any distinct traits, whereas 5-2 at least had the whole Yokai thing to add some memorability. I can’t lie, towards the very beginning and very end I was honestly a little bored, but again, that doesn’t make it a bad case by any means, and I thought the middle 80% of it was really good. For one final nitpick, I really wish…

…we could have seen and heard Juniper and Klavier performing The Guitar’s Serenade in that cutscene at the end instead of it just fading out, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be (Also, can I just say, on the note of voice acting, how awesome Klavier’s voice actor sounds?)…

…Overall I rank Turnabout Academy 14th out of 27 cases on my personal list, and so far the weakest of Dual Destinies. I still think it’s a great case, though, and Dual Destinies still hasn’t given me a case I don’t like, though I’m still waiting for one that breaches my Top 5. Onward then to 5-4: The Cosmic Turnabout, posts start on Monday! (Thanks for reading!)

@ JohnnyTLP Your "biggest issue" with Athena is her courtroom song? That ticks me off, but it's ok as long as you still like Athena overall. I'm sick of her being impugned. Otherwise, everything is good about your opinions.

@Noah: I can't even fathom that Athena is debated as a good character, other than the obvious fact that Phoenix and Apollo were hopeless in their first games as well. Admittedly, I could make a case against her on those grounds, but isn't being a bit clueless in your first AA game the norm? By the same hand, I could never call her anything but the weakest of the main three characters.

@ JohnnyTLP That statement of support is good. You're going to need positive feelings about Athena for the final case. Also, I agree that the cutscenes and voice acting can sometimes be bad. Want to play a game with good cutscenes? Play PLvsAA; a game with great cutscenes, great music, interesting crossover gameplay, bad 3D models, . . . and an absolutely terrible ending.

It's interesting to contrast the two games I've played that feature Japanese high schools. Persona 3, a urban fantasy setting, features characters who act like actual human beings. DD is about lawyers, a boring real life subject, yet it features ridiculous cartoon characters like Ted Tonate, Mayor Tenma, Aristotle Means, and the final villian. It's practically a contradiction.

Actually, Athena is one of the best lawyers in DD, I loved the ending to PLvsAA and, there's actually 3 more cases in the game left, unless you already or, aren't planning on, played the DLC.

@Noah: Yet another reason why I would never want to play Persona - I loathe urban fantasy and high school settings (5-3 didn't really bother me in regards to the latter, since it's more college than anything). As for 5-4, I guess? Aside from James Bond, everything gets better when you put it in space. @loverboy: I played the DLC case in-between 5-2 and 5-3, for continuity's sake.

@ JohnnyTLP I'm not watching any James Bond either. I'm just not interested. How can you say this case was like college? There was even a school festival just like the school in Persona 3. By the way, I'm not certain if I used "urban fantasy" correctly. I don't actually know what that term typically means.

@Noah: It seemed far more like university than any high school I've ever seen or heard of, granted, it's not like Ace Attorney is meant to take place in non-fictional world, so I suppose I can suspend my belief. Case in point, the fact that people went to Themis Legal to get their degrees in law pending the start of their careers seemed FAR more similar to college life, regardless.

@ JohnnyTLP So, did you "loathe" Myriam Scuttlebutt's antics? Those were the definition of high school drama for me. Persona 3 is much more mature. I have a new theory; I like high school settings because I never attended a high school. It's the opposite with you. My theory also says that I like dating simulators because I have no friends and no girlfriend.

@Noah: Now that I think about it, I never mentioned Myriam in my review, probably because I was this close to putting 5-3 below 4-4 just because of how annoying I found her, thank goodness she was barely ever on screen. Personally, I've always held strong to the concept that humans are entranced by that which they lack, so I can't disagree with your theory.
