    That doesn't really make sense as to why he did that. Then again, nothing he did between failing to protect Lord Elbert and finally meeting up with Lord Eliwood actually made sense.

    ^ He's trying to get revenge on what happened after the Black Fang ambushed him and his group. He seeks to do this by infiltrating their ranks and destroying them from within. He simply wasn't expecting to meet up with Eliwood while trying to do so.
