  • First a note of thanks. 18 people contributed either whole or partial top ten lists to this research beyond my own. These included people from all three Sub Wars communities and Four different Clans. Many thanks to my Fluffy comrades, including 5 members of our Pacific Fleet, Fuwa Fuwa Nihon who contributed. We also had lists given by members of ™, ƒς and βπ Clans, Thank You.

  • Breaking down the data has been an interesting endeavor. One initial meathod I tried was to rank the subs based primarily on the number of times each was proposed as the best sub, using the remaining ranking data to serve only for breaking Ties. This Yielded the following list, which has some difficulties.

  • 1) Silver Pike (5 times) 2) Snakehead (3 times) 3) Giant Z (2 times) 4) Type VII U-Boat (2 times) 5) Riptide 6) Big Walrus 7) Neptune Mk2 8) Garfish Adv. 9) Deep Manatee 10) Mega Mouth and S Class (tied) Once each from Riptide down. This list has too many ties and doesn't show subs often mentioned as top subs but without first place rankings. Next a firmer approach based on top ten appearances.

  • I also noticed that the 10 subs that come out on top using this method are the same 10 I gave in my sample list (my own votes), but not in the same order. This could either mean that I was on the right track in my own thinking on this, or that I biased the whole thing by providing a sample that suggested certain subs above others to other peoples lists.

  • A common factor cited in determining the best Subs is a base stat total of the main 5 stats. While most of these subs have high totals, (29+) there are 2 noteable exceptions in the Crustacea and Gaint Z, and of the two subs with the highest base stat totals (32) (Garfish Adv. and Blue Marine) only one ranked highly. Totals don't account for reload lag and puts too much weight on Surface Speed.

  • This isn't the finalized list, there are actually about two and a half lists that are incorperated here. This was just crunching the numbers on feedback I recieved. Popularity of use online is another factor I consider, but that needs to be tempered with availability considerations. I rarely see a Lv99 in a long range sub other than the Neptune MK2. Dev.'s popularity list free subs, etc.

  • Also I think some were voting for their favorite subs, which isn't always the same as the best subs.

  • Next factor to incorporate is the average ranking each got among their ranks given, that can then be transposed into a factor and multiplied by the above number of votes list for an overall rating to be ranked. setting average rank factor values: 1st=1 2nd=0.9 3rd=0.8 ... 10th=0.1 Caluculating and multiplying through yeilds the following list.

  • 9.2 Silver Pike [0.767x12] 7.7 Crustacea [.70x11] 6.0 Snakehead [.60x10] 6.0 Big Walrus [.75x8] 5.6 Neptune Mk2 [.70x8] 5.5 Riptide [.55x11] 4.7 Giant Z [.52x9] 4.3 I-168 [.538x8] 3.1 Type VII [.62x5] 3.0 Garfish Adv. [.50x6] ******* 2.1 Deep Manatee [.70x3] 1.8 Type XXI [.60x3] 1.6 Seahound 2 [.40x4] This results in a tie for 3rd place between the Snakehead and Big Walrus.

  • Given their proximity in the feedback and my in game observations of Neptune Mk2 usage for those who have it and stats considerations I feel it would be justifiable to promote it above the Big Walrus for the final list, which given the tie at 3rd would vault it past both and into lone 3rd place. All I would then need to do to finalize the list would be to find a suitable tie breaker for 4th place.
