    Nook's costume seems to originate from the second Japanese GameCube edition of the first game (Animal Forest e+), where if you hit his shop with a shovel or axe three times during the closing hours, he will let you in, but he will move slower and you can only buy or sell what's on display. Futhermore, his wares will be 17% more expensive, while yours will be 30% less.
