    Gates to Infinity felt more like a beta to this game, TBH. GtI is a bit easier than this game, they changed the level difficulty of wild pokemon so in SMD it takes more strategy. but the games aren't connected storywise. all you'll miss is knowing the significance of the character connections(eg. the Quagsire is the same Quagsire from GtI).

    The general consensus is that PSMD is better than Gates. I personally don't see a reason to bother with it unless you're curious over it, love gen5 pokes, or want to understand the Gates references in PSMD.

    The thing I really care about is the post game. In Gates to Infinity and Super Mystery Dungeon have stuff to do post game.

    GtI and SMD have nowhere near as close a long post game as Explorers. but SMD has all 720 Pokemon compared to GtI's 200+, so completing quests and connecting with legendaries will keep you busy for a long time after you beat the story.

    Do GTI,It's a great game. None of the games are directly connected,but SMD makes a lot of references and because all 720 Pokemon are in it,you can recruit supporting characters from the other MD games;but they won't have any impact on the main story. You can re-create team A.C.T and go into a dungeon as soon as you get them! So if anything,SMD takes place after all other MD games.

    Not sure, but the general consensus states that GTI is an atrcocity and SMD is a grand improvement over it. I'd check out some reviews before deciding. Understand why GTI received flake in the past and why SMD is being praised currently.

    I wouldn't go so far as to say Gates was bad. It's just underwhelming compared to the other entries. The main sticking point is that it only has ~150 pokemon (mostly gen5s), and the paid dlc dungeons. It also had a lot of gameplay changes from Sky that people had mixed opinions over.
